FineSoccer Kids 67

Welcome to the FineSoccer Kids Newsletter.  Today’s featured activity deals with rewarding runners.

If you haven’t seen it already, please check out the two newest books from FineSoccer.com.  They deal with how to be successful in soccer and in life.  The two books are SoccerAtEase by Lawrence Fine and Pursing Personal Perfection – A Personality Pyramid by Barry Gorman.  For more information please go to http://finesoccer.com/socceratease.htm

One of the frustrating things as a player is to make a long run for the ball (maybe an overlapping run as described at http://finesoccer.com/finesoccer_kids_33.htm) and after doing all of that hard work to make the run, the player with the ball decides not to use you.  After doing that a few times, it’s easy to get discouraged and decide not to make that type of run again.

However, it’s important as the runner to realize that while you might not have received the ball, your run might have created space for the player with the ball or someone else that proved to be helpful for your team.

In order to keep your teammates making these runs, if you are the player with the ball and you see a player making a hard run and for whatever reason you decide not to pass her the ball (for example if someone makes an overlapping run around you and the defender goes with the runner leaving you a clear path towards the goal) make sure that at the earliest time possible you acknowledge the move and let them know you saw the run that was made and appreciated it.  By either playing the ball to the person who makes a hard run or letting the player know how much you appreciated the hard run, it will help that person to continue to make the runs throughout the game.

Acknowledging a run is one of those small things that end up making the difference between a team winning or losing.
