FineSoccer Kids 59

Welcome to the FineSoccer Kids Newsletter.  Today’s subject deals with going to meet the ball

One of the most important things for a player to do when about to receive the ball is to go and meet the ball.  Almost everyone “says it” but not nearly enough players “do it”.  One reason players don’t do this enough is that when they go and meet a pass, and aren’t accustomed to doing so, they find it difficult to control the ball.

The reason it’s difficult to go meet the ball and then get it under control is that it goes against everything a player is taught when they are taught to “trap” the ball (for those of you who don’t know it, I HATE the word “trap” because too many people assume it means to stop the ball dead and that is not the way to successfully receive the ball most of the time).  In order to receive the ball, a player goes and meets the ball and then, most of the time, the player has to cushion the ball by pulling back (whether it’s with the foot, thigh, chest or head).  It’s almost impossible to pull back while going forward so the key is to go meet the ball, slow down and relax enough so you can cushion the ball.

The key to being able to slow down to cushion the ball while still going to meet the ball is to not wait till the last minute.  By thinking ahead of others, you can go and meet the ball and still have time to slow down to cushion the ball.

Go fast to meet the ball, slow down and relax to receive it and you will yourself receiving a lot more balls successfully
