FineSoccer Kids 38

Welcome to the FineSoccer Kids Newsletter.  Today’s subject deals with spreading the field.

When people talk about spreading the field they usually are referring to players going wide.  However, that is only half of spreading the field.  The part of spreading the field is to provide depth as well as width.

Going wide frequently means going from sideline to sideline and the advantage of doing this is to spread out to make it more difficult for the opponents to defend.  Providing depth makes it easier to spread out the opponents as well as to relieve pressure.

The way to spread the field with depth is to have a player push up on the opponents last defender (if the opponent plays with a sweeper it frequently means having a forward as far up as the sweeper will allow them without standing offside.  The other way to provide depth is in back and it means always allowing for support from behind.  Please understand that supporting from behind does NOT mean standing 50 yards back and watching but rather being close enough to be used as an easy outlet whenever necessary.

With outside players wide and players providing depth in the attack, it opens up a great deal of options for the attack since there is then a lot more space to work with.

Understanding how to spread the field with width and depth will allow you to become a much better soccer player.

Give this a try and let me know what you think be sending an email to kidscomments@finesoccer.com.
