FineSoccer Kids 37

Welcome to the FineSoccer Kids Newsletter.  Today’s subject deals with working on striking the ball with the instep.

First, if you haven’t done so yet, please take a moment to participate in the online survey at http://finesoccer.com/survey.htm.  This is being done to help a subscriber with some research so your participation will really be appreciated.

When discussing the subject of striking the wall with the instep, the first thing that is important to do is make sure everyone knows what is meant by the instep.  The instep is sometimes also referred to as the shoelaces.

The first problem players have while trying to strike the ball with the instep is a reluctance to lock the ankle with the toes pointed down. Once the players understand what is meant by the instep and also what is meant by locking the ankle, the easiest way I know to have them get accustomed to locking the ankle properly is to have them volley the ball after dropping it from their hands (almost like a keepers punt).  By doing this, they get accustomed to pointing their toes down and locking their ankle and don’t have to worry about kicking the ground and hurting their foot.  It’s important that they not pop the ball up but rather that they are able to play a line drive with the volley.

Next the emphasis should be on following through properly so after volleying the ball, they should follow through and land on their kicking foot.  By doing this is helps them to go through the ball and even get some top spin on the ball which will keep the ball low.

Once the player is able to do this properly, they should change from a volley to a half volley.  A half volley is when the ball hits the ground first and then volleyed right afterwards.  If everything was done properly while volleying, the player should be able to do a half volley real easily with the proper follow through and everything.

Now that the player can play a half volley properly with the instep, the next step is to have them hit a stationary ball with the instep.  This should be much easier since they have been striking the ball the exact same way already.  Now just emphasize that everything is the exact same and they will find much more success in their ability to strike the ball with the instep.
