FineSoccer Kids 26 Welcome to the FineSoccer Kids Newsletter. Today's subject deals with making the proper run to make the goal bigger offensively. When a player shoots toward the far post and she has teammates in the box, they should be told to follow the shot in order to get any rebound (a ball that the keeper might have saved but could not hold so it's free for a second shot). See diagram below
If, instead of going directly toward the goal, they bend their run to go toward the far post, they will increase their probability of scoring. By making this run, if the shot is hit far post and goes wide, the player making the proper run will have a good chance of being there to finish the shot. This means that instead of being able to score with a shot that is hit at an 8-yard wide area, a shot could be hit wide of the 8-yard goal and still result in a goal. See diagram below
Players who make the runs toward the far post when shots are hit tend to score more goals, which result in winning more games. It's a simple thing to do but requires the commitment and discipline to do the right thing every time because it means more running that doesn't always result in a goal. Any comments, questions or suggestions should be sent to kidscomments@finesoccer.com. To subscribe to any of the FineSoccer Newsletters, please go to http://finesoccer.com/subscrib.htm. Have a great day! Lawrence
